Samsung Galaxy Nexus – new “Google phone” supports IPv6 on mobile network (2G/3G)…
Few days ago Mobitel (Slovenian national mobile operator) started selling the new Google phone, “hidden” under the name Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The device is first on the market that uses new Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and we can confirm that system itself is functioning smoothly, its use is intuitive – but we are not impressed just because of that- this device is the first production Android phone that supports IPv6 on 2G/3G (mobile ) network ….
If you’re lucky and you are able to get the phone (phones are supplied by an explosive rate of one per day for each sales point office), after the quick basic configuration you can start spending some time on IPv6 protocol tests. First, send an SMS message containing “IPv6” to the number 1918, and in response you will get a message with instructions on how to configure IPv6 connection. This means that a system operator automatically granted the right to use IPv6 traffic. As already a few versions of Android so far have supported both the protocol (IPv4 and IPv6) on the WiFi interface, not surprisingly, with the expectation, we focused on testing the radio part, which connects the device to the GPRS / UMTS network.
Because a lot of data and settings are fairly hidden until we “root” the phone, yet we do not have the answers to some questions, but IPv6 works – via 3G we were able to establish the PDP context and the phone obtained an IPv6 address with no problems at all, worked from first attempt. We are still not sure about the DNS supplied, since this data is very mysteriously hidden (empty value). From all possible views – we don’t have an IPv4 address on our phone.
Of course, we first ran the most notorious application that does not work in IPv6-only environment – Skype. An interesting fact is that the Skype application logged-on to the central system, but none of our contacts were shown as “online” and no service was working. This brings us even more inclined to the theory of transport through theNAT64 …
Together with Mobitel experts we’ll find out in next days what’s going on and how exactly is our IPv4 traffic and connectivity working – but most importantly – IPv6 works over 3G!

a je kdo mogoče testiral v 2.3(.6) Androidu IPv6?
NAT64 requires SIP ALG that is specific to Skype, will your service provider will support for IPv6-Only device? NAT64 is required for IPv6-only configuration.
@MArko: Android 2.3 na;eloma v vmesniku podpira IPv6 na 3G, a bo zadeva delovala ko bo pravi chipset spodaj 🙂
@Jay: Up to operator, up to provider. Probably Skype will be forced to support IPv6 – sooner or later…
Does Nexus support IPv4/IPv6(Dual stack) mode over 3G interface?
No idea yet. Waiting for one of GGSNs to support PDPv4v6. Two PDP contexts in parallel are not supported.
